I’m not sure exactly what you mean here. For new writers, I look at it as investing in oneself. But, they have to do the work.

There is, after all, a curatorial arm of Medium that promotes good work. That’s how I generally discover new people I wish to follow. It behoves people to write well.

I also notice people who write thoughtful comments on my pieces. If comments make me want to know more, I go to their profile, read three pieces and decide if they are someone I would be interested in following. This aspect of the platform encourages reader/writer engagement.
