My (deceased) mother-in-law was a highly educated woman. But, born in 1917, she was a product of her times.

She had nothing against homosexuals, and had homosexual friends relatives. However, she constantly conflated male homosexuality and pedophilia, blithely refering to people as pedophiles in casual conversation as if there was nothing the matter with being a pedophile.

No matter how often we explained the difference, it just didn’t take. I am convinced that pedophile was the word implanted in her brain as a young woman and that weed would not be uprooted.

It was mortifying.
